Talk to your GP about perimenopause and menopause

Track your symptoms, prepare for a focused GP appointment and understand the options to discuss, so you leave with a clear plan for perimenopause or menopause.

Estimated time: 30 minutes plus 2–4 weeks of trackingUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you are noticing changes such as hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, low mood, brain fog, joint aches or changes to your periods, usually from your 40s onwards. Have a notebook or symptom app and a rough record of your recent periods.

Step by step

  1. Track your symptoms for a few weeks

Note each day which symptoms you have, how severe they are on a simple 0–3 scale and how they affect sleep, work, relationships and mood. Record your periods, including changes in timing or heaviness. A short, dated record helps your GP see patterns and is much more useful than trying to remember everything in the room.
