Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when your GP says they will refer you to a specialist, or you are already waiting and want to check your options. It covers England; the rules are different in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Have your NHS number and any referral letter or NHS App notification ready.

Step by step

  1. Know when the right applies

In England, if your GP refers you for a first outpatient appointment with a consultant-led team for a physical or mental health condition, you usually have a legal right to choose which NHS hospital or service, including some independent providers that offer NHS care. There are exceptions, such as urgent cancer referrals, emergencies, maternity and some mental health services. Ask your GP whether choice applies to your referral.
