Test and maintain smoke and CO alarms

Use this guide when you move in, when the clocks change in autumn, or if you are not sure your alarms work. Have a step stool, spare batteries if your alarms use them and the alarm instructions if you can find them.

Step by step

1. Count and locate your alarms

   Walk through your home and note every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. You should have at least one smoke alarm on every storey, ideally in hallways and landings. A CO alarm should be in any room with a fuel-burning appliance such as a gas boiler, gas fire, wood burner or open fire.
