Cars & Transport guide

Transfer or retain a private number plate

Move a private registration to another car, keep it on a retention certificate when you sell, and avoid the paperwork mistakes that delay DVLA changes.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when you are selling, scrapping or changing a car that has a private number, or want to put a number you own onto a vehicle. Have the V5C logbooks for both vehicles, any V750 or V778 certificate, your DVLA reference numbers and insurance details ready.

Step by step

  1. Check both vehicles are eligible

To take a number off or put one on a vehicle, it normally needs to be registered with the DVLA, able to move under its own power, and either taxed or declared off road with a SORN, with a valid MOT if it needs one. Check the details on the V5C match the vehicle. You cannot use a registration that would make a vehicle appear newer than it is, so check the age identifier on the number.
