Consumer Help guide

Use buy now, pay later without getting caught out

Decide whether buy now, pay later suits a purchase, track every plan and repayment, and know what to do and who to contact if you cannot pay.

Estimated time: 25–40 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide before choosing a buy now, pay later option at checkout, or if you already have several plans and want to take control. Have your banking app and any BNPL apps you use open.

Step by step

  1. Ask four questions before you click

Would I buy this today if I had to pay in full? Can I afford every instalment on the dates due, not just the first one? Do I already have other plans running? What happens if I pay late? If any answer makes you hesitate, pay by debit card or wait. Buy now, pay later is borrowing, and since 15 July 2026 most of it is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, which means providers must check affordability and treat you fairly.
