Work & Business guide

Make working from home productive and less lonely

Use practical ideas for workspace, daily structure, focus and staying connected to make home working more productive and easier on your wellbeing.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutes to planUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if you work from home for some or all of the week and find focus, boundaries or isolation a struggle, especially in the darker months. Have your usual weekly schedule to hand and a few minutes to look at where you work.

Step by step

  1. Set up a workspace that supports you

Choose one spot used mainly for work, even if it is a corner of a room, so your brain links it with focus. Position your screen at about eye level, an arm's length away, with feet flat and back supported; a laptop stand with a separate keyboard and mouse helps a lot. Put the desk side-on to a window to reduce glare and use a warm desk lamp as daylight fades. If you are an employee, ask your employer about a home workstation assessment.
