Write a UCAS personal statement in the new format

Plan, draft and polish a UCAS personal statement that answers the three set questions with specific evidence, in your own voice and within the character limit.

Estimated time: 3–6 hours over two to three weeksUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you or your teenager are applying to UK universities through UCAS this year. From 2026 entry the free-form statement was replaced by three set questions with a shared character limit, so check the exact wording and current deadlines in the UCAS Hub before you start. Have your course list and notes on your studies, reading and experience ready.

Step by step

  1. Understand the three questions

The statement now has three separate questions: why you want to study the course, how your qualifications and studies have prepared you, and what you have done outside education that is relevant. Each has a minimum length and together they share a 4,000-character limit, including spaces; check the current figures in the UCAS Hub. Because the same statement goes to all your choices, focus on the subject rather than a single university.
