Learning guide

Apply to university as a mature student

Choose a course, answer the UCAS personal statement questions using your life and work experience, line up a reference and check the funding that applies.

Estimated time: 1–2 hours over several sessionsUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you are 21 or over and thinking about starting an undergraduate degree, full-time or part-time. Have a list of your qualifications, a rough work history and any courses you are taking now, such as an Access to HE Diploma.

Step by step

  1. Shortlist courses that fit your life

Start with the practical constraints: how far you can travel, whether you need part-time or evening study, and when you can start. Then check each course page for entry requirements and whether it welcomes mature applicants or accepts an Access to HE Diploma or relevant experience. Email admissions with one clear question if unsure, for example: 'I am 34 and completing an Access to HE Diploma in Health Science. Would this meet your entry requirements for BSc Nursing?'
