Money guide

Check an investment is genuine before you invest

Use the FCA Register and Warning List, spot clone firms and high-pressure tactics, and follow a checklist before transferring any money to an investment.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide whenever you are offered an investment, pension transfer, crypto opportunity or trading platform, especially if it came through social media, a cold call or a friend. You need the firm's name, address, phone number, website and any reference number they have given you.

Step by step

  1. Pause and write down how the offer reached you

Note who contacted you, how, when, and what they promised. Unsolicited calls, messages, social media adverts featuring celebrities, promises of high guaranteed returns and pressure to act quickly are all warning signs. Do not transfer any money, share passwords or download remote-access software while you check.
