Find a lost dog or cat and update microchip details

Search effectively in the first hours after a pet goes missing, alert the right people and keep microchip details current so your pet can be returned.

Estimated time: 1–2 hours to start the search, then ongoingUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide straight away if your dog or cat has gone missing, or now as a check that you would be ready if it happened. Have a recent clear photo of your pet, its microchip number if you know it and the name of the microchip database it is registered with.

Step by step

  1. Search close to home first

Check sheds, garages, outbuildings, under cars, inside cupboards and anywhere your pet could be shut in or hiding, including neighbours' sheds with their permission. Cats in particular often hide silently nearby when frightened. Search again at dusk and dawn when it is quieter, calling your pet's name and shaking a food container they recognise.
