Write and give a speech for a wedding or farewell

Plan, write and deliver a warm three-to-five-minute speech for a wedding, retirement, birthday or funeral, with a clear structure and notes you can rely on.

Estimated time: 2–4 hours over a weekUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when you have been asked to speak at a wedding, leaving do, milestone birthday or funeral and want to do it well without over-rehearsing. Have the date, how long you have been asked to speak for and who else is speaking.

Step by step

  1. Agree the brief with the organiser

Ask how long you should speak, where your speech comes in the running order, whether there will be a microphone and if there is anything you should or should not mention. For a funeral, check with the family which memories they would like shared. Three to five minutes is usually ideal: long enough to say something meaningful, short enough to hold attention.
