Everything Else guide

Start researching your family history

Build a family tree from what relatives know, then use birth, marriage, death and census records to trace your ancestors back a few generations accurately.

Estimated time: 2–3 hours to start, then as you likeUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you want to trace your family tree, perhaps as a winter project or before older relatives' memories are lost. Have a notebook or family tree app and any family documents, photos, certificates or letters you can find.

Step by step

  1. Start with yourself and work backwards

Write down what you know for certain about yourself, your parents and your grandparents: full names, dates and places of birth, marriage and death. Mark each fact as 'confirmed with document' or 'family story'. Working one generation at a time from known facts avoids the common mistake of attaching yourself to the wrong family further back.
