Sort out a GHIC and travel insurance before a trip

Get a free GHIC from the NHS, choose travel insurance that covers your health conditions and plans, and know what to do if you fall ill abroad.

Estimated time: 45–90 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide a few weeks before a trip abroad, including winter sun, ski trips and festive visits to family. Have your passport, NHS number if you know it, trip dates and destination, and a list of any medical conditions and medicines for everyone travelling.

Step by step

  1. Apply for a free GHIC through the NHS

A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get medically necessary state healthcare in EU countries and some other countries at the same cost as a local resident, which may still mean paying something. Apply free through the official NHS route; unofficial websites may charge a fee for the same free card. Each traveller, including children, needs their own card, and an unexpired EHIC remains valid until its expiry date.
