Hold a safe bonfire or fireworks night at home

Plan a garden fireworks or bonfire evening that follows the law, keeps guests safe and respects neighbours, from buying to clearing up.

Estimated time: 45–60 minutes planning, plus the eveningUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you are thinking about fireworks or a small bonfire in your own garden around Bonfire Night, Diwali or New Year. Have a rough guest list, the size of your garden and your neighbours in mind.

Step by step

  1. Decide if your garden is suitable

Measure the space and read the safety distance printed on each firework you are considering. If you cannot keep spectators at the stated distance, or you are near thatched roofs, trees, sheds or parked cars, a local organised display is safer. Many councils and community groups hold public displays, which are often better for young children and pets.
