Cars & Transport guide

Cut your fuel and car running costs: ideas

Pick from practical ideas to use less fuel or charge more cheaply and spend less on parking and upkeep, then turn them into a running-cost plan.

Estimated time: 45–90 minutesUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide when fuel, charging and car bills feel higher than they should and you want concrete changes rather than general advice. Have your last few fuel or charging receipts, your car's handbook and your recent service and MOT paperwork to hand.

Step by step

  1. Find out what you really spend

Add up a typical month of fuel or charging, parking, tolls and charges, and divide yearly costs like servicing, tyres, tax and insurance by twelve. Note your current miles per gallon or miles per kWh from the trip computer, or by filling up and recording the mileage between fills. Write the total at the top of a page. Your aim is to choose two or three ideas that make the biggest difference to that number.
