Use this guide if you are thinking of selling a second car, giving up a car altogether, or simply cutting how much you drive. Have a rough idea of your weekly journeys and what your car costs you each year, including insurance, tax, servicing, fuel and parking.

Step by step

  1. Map your real journeys

For one normal week, write down every trip: where, why, how far, when and who was with you. Mark each as must be by car, could be another way, or could be avoided altogether, for example by combining errands or using delivery. Add up your yearly car costs, including depreciation if you know it, and divide by the trips you make. Seeing the cost per trip makes it easier to judge each alternative fairly.
