DIY & Repairs guide

Lay click laminate flooring in a room

Prepare the subfloor, plan the layout and lay click-fit laminate with neat expansion gaps, cuts round doors and tidy finishing at the skirting.

Estimated time: 1 day for an average bedroomUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide for a dry room such as a bedroom, living room or hallway with a reasonably flat floor. Have the laminate packs acclimatised in the room, a suitable underlay, spacers, a tapping block and pull bar, a saw, a tape measure, a pencil, a square and knee pads ready.

Step by step

  1. Check the subfloor and acclimatise the boards

Lay the unopened packs flat in the room for the time the manufacturer states, usually at least 48 hours. Remove old carpet, gripper rods and staples, then check the floor with a long straight edge; dips or humps beyond the manufacturer's tolerance need levelling first. On concrete, especially ground floors, you will need a damp-proof membrane or an underlay with one built in.
