Work & Business guide

Recover unpaid wages from your employer

Check what you are owed, raise it in writing, use ACAS early conciliation and know your options if an employer will not pay your wages or holiday pay.

Estimated time: 45–60 minutes to prepareUpdated: 2 October 2026

Use this guide if your pay is late, short, missing or has unexplained deductions, or holiday pay or final pay has not arrived after leaving. Have your contract, payslips, timesheets or rotas, and bank statements. Act quickly, because strict time limits apply to tribunal claims.

Step by step

  1. Work out exactly what you are owed

List each pay period with the hours or days you worked, the rate in your contract and what you were actually paid. Include overtime, commission, holiday pay and any deductions shown on your payslip. Check your pay is at least the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage for your age; the current rates are on GOV.UK. A clear table with totals makes every later step easier.
