Report a pothole and claim for damage to your car

Report a dangerous pothole to the right highway authority and build a strong claim for tyre, wheel or suspension damage caused by a road defect.

Estimated time: 1–2 hours over several weeksUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you have hit a pothole that damaged your car, or you want to report a road defect before someone gets hurt. You need your phone for photos, the exact location, and any repair invoices. This is general information, not legal advice.

Step by step

  1. Record the pothole safely

Only return to the pothole when it is safe, never stopping in live traffic. Take photos showing its size and depth, with an everyday object for scale, and wider shots showing its position on the road and nearby landmarks. Note the road name, nearest house number or junction, direction of travel, date and time. Photograph the damage to your car, such as tyre bulges, bent wheels or scraped bodywork.
