Return an unwanted gift or shop purchase

Use this guide after birthdays, Christmas or an impulse buy when an item is not faulty but you do not want it. Have the item, its packaging and any receipt, gift receipt or order confirmation ready.

1. Work out how it was bought

   Your rights depend on whether the item was bought in a shop, online or by phone. For shop purchases there is no legal right to return goods you have changed your mind about, so it depends on the store's returns policy. For most online and phone orders, the buyer has a 14-day right to cancel after delivery.
