Everything Else guide

Set up a residents' or community group

Gather neighbours around a shared issue, agree simple rules and roles, open a group bank account and get the council or landlord to take you seriously.

Estimated time: 3–5 hours over a monthUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you and your neighbours want to tackle a shared issue, such as estate repairs, traffic, a neglected green space or community events, and want to be heard as a group. Have a clear idea of the issue and a few interested neighbours.

Step by step

  1. Define your purpose and area

Write one or two sentences saying what the group is for and which streets, blocks or estate it covers, for example: 'To improve the shared spaces of [estate] and represent residents to the housing association.' A clear purpose attracts members and helps you decide what is in and out of scope. Check whether a residents' association or community group already exists that you could join or revive.
