Start learning British Sign Language

Learn the BSL fingerspelling alphabet and first everyday signs, choose a recognised course and practise with Deaf signers respectfully.

Use this guide if you want to communicate with a Deaf family member, colleague or customer, or simply want to learn a new language. You need a quiet space, a mirror or phone camera, and a way to watch videos.

Step by step

  1. Learn fingerspelling and your name

    BSL uses a two-handed fingerspelling alphabet, which is different from American Sign Language. Learn the letters in groups of five with a video from a recognised source, then spell your own name slowly until you can do it smoothly. Practise in front of a mirror and check your handshapes match. Fingerspelling helps you fill gaps while you learn signs.
