Decide whether to repair or replace a broken phone

Weigh up screen and battery repairs, insurance, warranty and trade-in so you choose the cheapest safe option for a cracked, wet or failing phone.

Estimated time: 30–60 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide when your phone has a cracked screen, a battery that dies by lunchtime, water damage or a failing charging port. Have the model name, your bank and insurance details, and any phone contract paperwork ready.

Step by step

  1. Make it safe and save your data first

If the screen is shattered, cover it with clear tape or a screen protector to stop glass cuts, and stop using a phone whose battery is swollen, hot or bulging the case; do not charge it and keep it away from soft furnishings. If it still works, back it up now to iCloud, Google or a computer before anyone repairs it. For water damage, switch it off and do not charge it or put it in rice; let it dry and get it checked.
