Protect your family from AI voice and deepfake scams

Set up a family code word, a call-back rule and safer social media habits so a cloned voice or fake video of a loved one cannot talk you into paying.

Estimated time: 30–40 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you worry about calls or voice notes that sound exactly like a relative asking for urgent money, or videos of public figures promoting investments. Have your family group chat or contact list ready so you can agree the rules together.

Step by step

  1. Agree a family code word

Choose a word or short phrase that is not guessable from social media, such as a made-up word or an old family joke, and share it in person or by phone, not in writing online. Agree that anyone asking for money, bank details or secrecy in an emergency must give the code word. A scammer using a cloned voice will not know it, and a real relative will understand why you asked.
