Review app permissions and location tracking

Audit which apps can see your location, camera, microphone, contacts and photos on iPhone or Android, and switch off tracking you never agreed to.

Estimated time: 25–40 minutesUpdated: 1 October 2026

Use this guide if you have many apps installed, have shared a phone with an ex-partner, or simply want to know what your phone reveals about you. Have your phone charged and your passcode to hand.

Step by step

  1. Start with the permission dashboard

On iPhone open Settings, Privacy and Security, which lists Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Contacts and Photos with the apps using each. On Android open Settings, Security and privacy (or Privacy), then Permission manager, which groups apps by permission. Work through location, microphone and camera first, as these reveal the most.
