Use this guide if your child, partner or friend is learning to drive and you want to help with practice between lessons. Have your driving licence, the learner's provisional licence details and your car insurance documents ready.
Step by step
Check you are allowed to supervise
GOV.UK sets the rules: you must be at least 21, qualified to drive the type of car (for example manual or automatic), and have held a full licence for that type for at least 3 years. The learner must hold a valid provisional licence, and the car must be roadworthy, taxed and display L plates front and back (D plates are an option in Wales). While supervising you are responsible for the drive, so the usual rules apply to you: be fit to drive and do not use a hand-held phone. Check the full rules on GOV.UK before the first session.
